Championing Children’s Eye Health: World Sight Day 2024

As World Sight Day approaches with the theme ‘Love Your Eyes (Kids),’ the importance of healthy vision for children takes center stage. Mr. Sony Thomas, Executive Director of CBM India, in an exclusive conversation with Dr. Asawari Savant, Sr. Sub Editor, Elets Technomedia, highlights how good eyesight is foundational for a child’s future and the significant role eye health plays in education. In this interview, he shares insights into the challenges faced by children with vision problems and the vital work CBM India is doing to ensure equitable eye care for all. Edited excerpts

What does the theme ‘Love Your Eyes (Kids)’ mean to you, and why is it important?

The theme ‘Love Your Eyes (Kids)’ emphasizes the critical importance of vision in a child’s life. Healthy eyesight is not just about seeing well; it’s the foundation for learning and overall development. Children with sight loss often face significant barriers to education, and it’s crucial that we highlight the importance of early interventions and accessible eye care.

Can you share some statistics that highlight the impact of sight loss on children’s education?

Studies have shown that children experiencing sight loss are less likely to receive an education. Without proper vision, their ability to engage in learning activities diminishes, making it difficult for them to succeed academically. This is particularly alarming in marginalized communities where access to quality eye care can be limited.

What role does early intervention play in addressing vision problems among children?

Early intervention is key to addressing vision problems. By prioritizing eye health from a young age, we can diagnose, treat, and often cure many issues before they escalate. Simple solutions, such as providing eyeglasses, can drastically improve a child’s ability to stay in school and perform better in class.

How does CBM India support children in marginalized communities who may face barriers to eye care?

For over 55 years, CBM India has been dedicated to addressing avoidable blindness and visual impairments. Our work focuses on providing inclusive quality eye care services, ensuring that marginalized communities receive the necessary support, such as eye screenings, corrective surgeries, and affordable glasses. We believe that equitable eye care is a fundamental right.

What message would you like to convey to the public on this World Sight Day?

On this World Sight Day, I urge everyone to join us and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in advocating for accessible eye care, early screening, and affordable treatment for all. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to see, learn, and grow. Let’s work towards a future where no child’s education is hindered by poor eyesight.

Mr. Thomas’s insights shed light on the critical intersection between vision and education for children. As we observe World Sight Day 2024, let us commit to advocating for accessible eye care and supporting initiatives that ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive with healthy vision. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of children and their futures.
