As screen time continues to surge, so do concerns about its impact on eye health. Dr. Deshanie Rai, Vice President of Global Science, Regulatory, and Advocacy, OmniActive Health Technologies (OmniActive), was invited to join this year’s Eye Health Summit™, hosted by integrative ophthalmologist Dr. Rudrani Banik, to highlight the critical role of macular carotenoids in protecting eye health and supporting vision performance. The hybrid summit, taking place May 1–7, brings together experts in eye care, nutrition, and wellness to explore holistic strategies for optimal visual health, with OmniActive being a lead sponsor.
Dr. Rai will participate in the master class session titled “Nutrition and Lifestyle For Your Eyes.” More specifically, she will discuss the role of macular carotenoids in supporting ocular health throughout the lifecycle, their relevance for eye strain as a result of digital device use, and conditions such as age-related macular degeneration.
As part of this master class, OmniActive will spotlight the Lutemax Kids Study, published in Advances in Therapy in 2024. This 6-month randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial assessed the effects of Lutemax Kids in healthy children ages 5–12. Results showed significant improvements in aspects of cognitive health, including attention, memory, visual processing speed, and reduced digital eye strain, demonstrating how early intake of lutein and zeaxanthin can benefit both brain and eye health.
“We’re excited to contribute to this important conversation and education event,” said Dr. Rai. “Our goal is to provide attendees with practical, science-based information to help support eye health through an integrative approach that also includes macular carotenoids, the only nutrients exclusively accumulated in the macula and that the body cannot make.”
OmniActive’s involvement aligns with its ongoing “Lutein For Every Age” initiative, which emphasises the importance of lutein and zeaxanthin, two essential macular carotenoids, in supporting eye health across the lifespan, particularly in a digital-first world. With over 80% of adults using digital devices for more than two hours daily and nearly 67% using two or more screens simultaneously, digital eye strain is on the rise, according to the Vision Council. Symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes are fueling the demand for eye health solutions rooted in nutrition.
A long-time advocate for integrative approaches to vision wellness, Dr. Banik formulates with Lutemax 2020, a clinically researched extract containing all three essential macular carotenoids: lutein, RR-zeaxanthin, and RS-zeaxanthin.
