To learn health tips for strengthening lungs, OnlyMyHealth team spoke to Dr Vivek Nangia, Principal Director and Head Pulmonology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

“Improving lung capacity has several advantages. It can result in increased stamina and endurance, better immune functions, reduced risk of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma, and slow down the progression of these diseases if they are already present,” Dr Nangia said.

Adding further, he said, “It also results in better mental health, enhanced recovery from illness, improved sleep quality, so overall a better quality of life.”

Here are ten tips recommended by Dr Nangia to help you improve lung capacity.

  • Perform breath-holding exercises, such as the Buteyko method or practicing holding your breath for short periods, to increase lung capacity over time.
  • Pursed Lip Breathing: This technique involves breathing in through the nose and exhaling slowly through pursed lips. It helps to improve oxygen exchange and lung function.
  • Practice Yoga :Pranayama and other such activities emphasize deep, controlled breathing, which can improve lung capacity and overall respiratory health.

3. Engage in Interval Training

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can boost lung capacity by challenging your lungs to work harder and more efficiently during short bursts of intense activity.
